Each year, Pennsylvania residents are at greater risk as the number of people who access illegal guns increases.
Consider These Facts
IN PENNSYLVANIA:
- Gun violence is responsible for the deaths of 1,200 people each year.
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - In 2007, Pennsylvania had 719 homicides; 73% result from the use of firearms.
"Crime in the U.S, 2007" U.S. Department of Justice, FBI - In 2006 there were 1,361 deaths and 1,691 hospitalizations in Pennsylvania
due to firearm-related injuries.
Pennsylvania State Injury Indicators Report 2006 - "The National Healthy People 2010" objective of the U.S. Department for Health and
Human Services is to reduce firearm-related deaths to 4.9 per 100,000. Pennsylvania's
rate is almost three times that goal.
Pennsylvania State Injury Indicators Report 2006 - Pennsylvania has the highest rate in the nation of black homicide victims—29.52
murders per 100,000 population—which equates to more then six times the overall U.S.
rate for victims of all races. 81% of those homicides were committed with handguns.
